Tears have several very important functions and are essential for the health and transparency of the cornea (the surface of the eye). Significantly:
•Tears keep the conjunctiva moist and the mucoid protein which which they contain acts as a lubricant.
•They ‘flush’ the conjunctiva, helping to ‘remove’ particulate material and other irritants from the surface of the eyes.
•They contain a ‘strong’ bactericidal agent that helps to minimise infection and to aid healing.
The main issues surrounding tear production are Blocked Tear Ducts and Dry Eye
